I’ve started updating my headshot session on my commercial blog

Getting the best deal

• Set up a phone or in-person consultation with the photographer to talk about your expectations. See if their work style is aligned with what you want.
• Costs and fees: Ask before setting an appointment or paying a deposit. Some things to ask about: Sitting fees, required purchases or package deals, outfit changes, outdoor and indoor locations, poses, digital touch-ups.
• Proofs: Photographers should provide you with sample photos to choose from. Is there a charge to take them home? How quickly must you make a decision?
• Prints: Find out how long they will last. What sizes are available? Are they framed? Will your negatives or digital files be archived?
• Extras: Does the studio offer an online proof book, coffee table book, DVD, digital copies that can be emailed to friends and family?
• Making it personal: Can you be photographed in your grandparents’ backyard? With your dad’s football jersey, mom’s pearl necklace, your pet, your car?

Looking your best

Girls

• Don’t wear all your makeup to the shoot. Bring your standards, for touchups.

Boys and girls

• Shave (face, underarms, legs) the night before so any red bumps will not be as noticeable. Bring a hair brush or comb.
• Get haircuts or trims about a week beforehand so the style looks natural.

Clothes

• Choose comfy items to mix and match. Stick with neutral tones and solid colors (jeans and a white shirt is usually a good look). Avoid logos, patterns and anything you haven’t worn before. Iron everything and bring them on hangers.
• Make sure there are no sweat marks, holes or other defects. Don’t forget the accessories and shoes.
• Stand up for yourself. Tell the photographer if you don’t want to pose a certain way. Your discomfort will be obvious in the photographs.
